When I was asked to create an art workshop inspired by Khadambi Asalache’s beautiful home, I was overwhelmed with ideas. Every corner of his space sparked something in me, but it was his paisley bedspread, adorned with Indian block printed designs, that truly captivated my heart. This summer, the stars aligned, and I found myself back in India, where I sourced some traditional wooden blocks that brought back memories of my own journey with block printing. Leading this workshop at was a full-circle moment for me—seeing the creativity and unique designs that the participants brought to life was just so lovely!
We finished the workshop by stitching Midori-style notebooks to keep our prints safe, making it a day filled with learning, creativity, and connection. A huge thank you to Laura and Erica from @575wandsworthroadnt for this wonderful opportunity. I’m so grateful to have shared this experience with everyone who joined.
575 Wandsworth Road was the home of Kenyan poet and civil servant Khadambi Asalache until his death in 2006. Following his death he left it to the National Trust, which opened the house as a museum for pre-booked guided tours.
