My taste buds first burst into flames when I accidentally bit into a chilli at the age of 7. I had just moved to India from England, where, I can safely state, such accidents do not happen.
Sprinkling chopped chillies (the humbler green variety) into curries to enhance its flavour is quite commonplace in India, more so in my grandmother’s house. What I thought was a French green bean, was obviously not. The said accident followed… and surprisingly resulted in a lifelong addiction. My taste buds cannot particularly deal with it, but I want it nonetheless!
Green chillis, yellow chillis, Jalapenos, Scotch Bonnets, Serranos, Poblanos – I have tasted them, hated them and wanted more.
So one day, I was in dire need of inspiration. I was dealing with it by procrastinating and pottering around in the kitchen. This red chilli just sat there – tantalising me. This interaction resulted in this artwork.
It also resulted in a Thai red curry which was truly to hot to handle.
