I have been seeing a trend of colouring in the negative space in drawings and paintings, and leaving the subject matter in black and white. So thought I would give it a try. I did and I love the effect! But also had an epiphany of sorts while colouring, which I have said many a times, I find highly therapeutic. Just like adding colour to negative space around the subject can yield beautiful results, surely the same can be applied to ‘colouring in’ the negativity in life with hues of positivity? Th doom and gloom in the world today, especially confronted with this pandemic is overwhelming. But if we try and look a bit more, the stories of humanity, inclusivity and kindness are also vying to be heard. It’s not about every cloud having a silver lining. The silver lining is inherit. ‘Colouring in the negative’ needs a bit of effort and willingness to fill in the dreaded emptiness with dogged optimism!
The magnificent Statue of Lady Liberty is not only an American National Monument. It is a symbol of hope and aspiration for the entire world – standing there enlightening the world. What if our Lady Liberty could speak today?
